Rep. Cary Condotta to serve on two fiscal committees

Rep. Cary Condotta, Republican, 12th DistrictRep. Cary Condotta, R-East Wenatchee, will serve on both the House Appropriations and Finance committees this coming legislative session when it convenes Jan. 12. Condotta will also serve as the ranking Republican on the House Commerce and Gaming Committee, which will consider issues relating to alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and the regulation of gaming.

“I’m really looking forward to what’s sure to be a lively debate in light of the governor’s most recent budget proposals,” said Condotta. “Despite an expected eight-percent increase in revenue for the upcoming biennium, it appears as though the governor will continue to pursue an extensive tax package, including a capital gains tax. I’m sure many similar proposals will be heard in both the fiscal committees I serve on this session.”

Condotta has served as the caucus lead on many of the issues to be considered by the Commerce and Gaming Committee since both Initiative 1183 (liquor privatization)passed in 2011 and Initiative 502 (recreational marijuana legalization) passed in 2012.

The Commerce and Gaming Committee is a newly created committee. Many of the issues it will cover were formerly referred to the House Government Accountability and Oversight Committee, which has been eliminated.

“This committee will receive a lot of attention this session as we discuss the emerging cannabis market,” said Condotta. “Several constituents have brought forth ideas and concerns related to the market and the implementation of the initiative, and I will be working with the committee to address their concerns and possible, unintended consequences in the initiative.”

Condotta represents the 12th District, which includes Chelan and Douglas counties and parts of Grant and Okanogan.
